One dead and two injured in deer attack in Spain

Madrid, Oct 20 (dpa/GNA) – A 91-year-old man has lost his life, in an attack by a deer on residents of a farm in Spain.

The emergency services and the Guardia Civil police unit, reported on Friday that the 84-year-old wife and 61-year-old son of the deceased were injured and taken to hospital.

The attack occurred on Thursday evening in Castril, the the Andalusia region, approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Granada, they said.

The animal was reportedly shot with a hunting rifle by the 61-year-old. It is unknown how the deer gained access to the farm premises.

The Guardia Civil said it has already launched an investigation.

The regional newspaper Granada Hoy wrote, that residents of the area are unsettled due to the attack. It is feared that there may be other aggressive antlered animals in the region.

The mayor of the municipality of Castril, Miguel Pérez Jiménez, meanwhile called for calm. He said measures would be taken to ensure the safety of residents, and visitors to the area.

Initially, he mentioned that the condition of the deer population in the Sierra de Castril Natural Park should be examined. Following this, it must be decided whether further measures are required, to protect citizens and prevent such incidents in the future.
