At least 94 die after fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria

Lagos, Oct. 16, (dpa/GNA) – At least 94 people have been killed following the explosion of a petrol tanker in Nigeria, police reports said on Wednesday.

Some 50 other people were injured, including women and children, police spokesman Lawan Shi’isu Adam told dpa.

The lorry driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle overnight in the town of Majiya, in the northern state of Jigawa.

Despite police warnings, numerous residents gathered at the accident site, according to Adam. People were attempting to collect the petrol leaking from the tanker.

The spokesman said that when the vehicle exploded shortly after the accident, it resulted in a high number of casualties.

Local authorities have scheduled a mass burial for today.
