Israel says 50 lorries with aid transferred to northern Gaza Strip

Tel Aviv/Gaza, Oct. 16, (dpa/GNA) – Following warnings about starvation in the northern section of the Gaza Strip, Israel reported on Wednesday that 50 lorries of aid had entered the area.

The Israeli authority responsible for Palestinian affairs, the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), stated that the contents include food, water and medicine.

The US government, recognizing the severe humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, increased pressure on its ally Israel on Tuesday.

It was reported that unless the situation for the people in the coastal strip significantly improves within 30 days, there could be a violation of US laws regarding military support, which might also endanger US military aid to Israel.

According to media reports, Washington demanded that at least 350 lorries with aid should be able to enter the coastal strip daily.

Israeli human rights groups had warned of a strategy of displacement through starvation of the residents of northern Gaza.

The army began a new ground offensive in the north on October 6, urging up to 400,000 civilians who had endured a year of war to move to so-called safe zones in the south.
