Istanbul, Oct. 16, (dpa/GNA) – The eastern Turkish province of Malatya was hit by a magnitude-5.9 earthquake on Wednesday, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya wrote on X.
The minister said 43 people are being treated by medics, while no deaths have been reported.
The quake was reportedly also felt in the surrounding provinces of Elâzığ and Diyarbakır.
Four people were rescued unharmed from a damaged building in Elâzığ, the disaster management agency AFAD said.
The state-run Anadolu Agency said three buildings were damaged in the quake.
Authorities called on residents to remain outdoors for the time being.
Malatya was among the regions affected by the devastating earthquakes that hit south-eastern Turkey and neighbouring Syria on October 6, 2023, killing 50,000 people.
More than 1,000 people died in Malatya, where at least 120,000 residents are still housed in emergency container shelters according to AFAD after tens of thousands of buildings were destroyed by the twin quakes.
