Arrests reported after attempted attack near Tel Aviv in August

Tel Aviv, Oct 15, (dpa/GNA) – Israeli security forces say they have detained eight Palestinians, in connection with a failed attack in Tel Aviv in August.

Israeli police said on Tuesday that those arrested were members of the Palestinian Islamist Hamas organization, from the area around the city of Nablus in the West Bank.

They were allegedly supposed to carry out attacks in Israel, on behalf of a Hamas leadership unit in Turkey.

A man carrying an explosive device in his backpack was killed in the explosion, which probably occurred prematurely, on August 18 in the south of Tel Aviv.

He was also a Hamas member, according to the police. A passerby was slightly injured in the detonation near a synagogue.

One of those detained had travelled to Turkey several times to collect money for explosives from Hamas members there, and to be trained in the construction of explosive devices, the police said.

The military wings of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility for the attempted attack.
