2024 World Post Day: Ghana Post touts achievements in revolutionising postal services

Accra, Oct. 9, GNA-The Managing Director of Ghana Post, Mr Bice Osei Kuffuor, says the Organisation has embraced innovative digital services to meet the modern-day customer needs and remain profitable in business.

He highlighted local and global significance of postal services, and outlined various transformative measures Ghana Post had undergone in recent years to stay afloat in business.

Mr Kuffuor made these remarks during a ceremony to mark 2024 World Post Day in Accra on Wednesday.

The event also commemorated the 150th Anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), being held on the theme: “150 Years of Enabling Communication and Empowering Peoples Across Nations”.

Mr Kuffuor said the story of Ghana Post had been a journey of resilience, adaptation, and forward-thinking to meet the needs of its customers.

“From its humble beginnings under colonial rule to its current status as a digital leader in Africa, the Ghana Post has evolved to meet the needs of an ever-changing society,” he noted.

He outlined the digital innovations that had transformed Ghana Post into a modern, efficient, and customer-focused organisation.

“We are inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead,” Mr Kuffuor said, and expressed the Organisation’s commitment to embracing further digital advancements, such as artificial intelligence in postal services and expanding digital services to underserved communities across the country.

The Managing Director of Ghana Post mentioned several key milestones that had significantly improved postal services in the country, including Ghana Post Digital Address System, which had provided every location in Ghana with a unique digital address.

“This groundbreaking innovation has drastically improved delivery times and accuracy,” Mr Kuffuor stated, and underscored the system had revolutionised mail delivery and reduced errors.

“Ghana Post has also implemented the Enterprise Postal System (EPS) and the International Postal System (IPS), which allow customers to track their parcels in real time, enhancing transparency and boosting international collaborations,” he stated.

Mr Kuffuor noted that the Organisation’s transformation was evident not only in its operational capabilities but also in its financial success.

“In 2023, Ghana Post recorded a remarkable 40% increase in revenue,” he said, noting,”This growth is largely attributed to the company’s focus on digitalisation, with parcel and EMS (Express Mail Service) deliveries now contributing over 70% to its revenue base”.

He explained that it had shifted from traditional letter services to modern delivery solutions, and it had paid off tremendously.

The MD of Ghana Post said its successes had earned Ghana Post recognition on the global stage, including the prestigious title of “Most Digitised Postal Service in Africa” by the UPU”.

Mr Kuffuor also highlighted the Organisation’s role in advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate change mitigation measures in its operations.

“By digitalising our operations and reaching underserved areas, we are contributing to economic growth, social inclusion, and the reduction of inequalities,” Kuffuor noted.

As part of Ghana Post’s commitment to literacy and education, it participated in the UPU’s International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People, which encouraged creativity and reflection among the youth.

“This year’s theme asks young people to write letters to future generations, inspiring them to think about the world they hope to inherit,” Kuffuor stated, thus, underscoring the role of communication in shaping a better future.

“Our vision is to build a postal service that is not only technologically advanced but also inclusive and accessible to all,” he added.

“We are committed to bridging the digital divide and providing opportunities for all Ghanaians to benefit from our services,” he assured.

“On this World Post Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to innovation, integration and inclusion and ensuring that Ghana Post remains a vital part of our national infrastructure and a beacon of connection, empowerment, and pride for all,” Mr Kuffuor stated.

The ceremony also witnessed the unveiling of the Universal Post Union’s 150th Commemorative Stamp.
