Sefwi-Elluokrom (WN/R), Oct. 02, GNA – The Western North Regional Secretariat of the Centre for National Culture (CNC), as part of measures to fight against child marriage and child abuse, has started a campaign against the menace in six communities of the region.

The sensitisation is being done through drama in selected communities from the Bia West and Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality.

They are Essam, Mfanteman, Elluokrom, Aboabo, Merewa and Nkatieso.

The CNC used drama, music and dance to educate and entertain residents on the need to stop cases of child marriages and child abuse in the communities.

The campaign, sponsored by UNICEF, is on the theme: “End Child Marriage”.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the exercise at Elluokrom in the Bia West District, Mr Edmond King Gyamfi, Western North Regional Director of the CNC, said the engagement focused on economic, social, legal and medical consequences of child marriages and what needed to be done by parents and stakeholders to end the menace.

He expressed concern over the dangers of child marriage and advised parents to provide the educational needs of their daughters to keep their interests in school to help them get better life opportunities.

The event brought together opinion leaders, heads of schools and community members of the selected communities to deliberate on the need to end child marriage in cocoa communities.

The CNC also used the opportunity to educate participants on the dangers of unprotected sex, and personal hygiene among others.

Some of the participants in an interview with the GNA promised to help end child marriage, especially among schoolgirls.
