Accra, Sept. 27, GNA – The Korle Bu Mortuary has resumed operations following the temporary suspension of a nationwide strike by the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG).
The strike was declared last Thursday to advocate for improved working conditions.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency on Friday confirmed that activities at the mortuary were proceeding vigorously.
Mr. Peter Hode, Administrator of Pathology at Korle Bu Sub-BMC, said that operations had returned to normal since the strike was lifted.
Mr. John Toe, Head of Attendance at the mortuary, confirmed, “We are working. Families can come to retrieve the bodies of their deceased relatives.”
A relative of a deceased person added, “Yeah, It’s clear that work has resumed. I came here this morning to collect the body of our relative, and we received it.”
MOWAG temporarily suspended its indefinite strike on Thursday, giving the government a two-week ultimatum to address their urgent demands.
The strike was initially called to advocate for better working conditions, including sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE), resolution of salary arrears, and financial clearance for hiring 500 new mortuary workers.
Mr. Richard Kofi Jordan, General Secretary of MOWAG, warned that the strike would resume if the government does not meet their demands within the two-week period.
He assured that the workers would persist in their fight for their rights until the government took action.
