Court remands 39 protestors, issued bench against absentee protestor

Accra Sept. 24, GNA – Thirty-nine Democratic Hub protestors who were nabbed over acts of lawlessness, have been remanded by two different Circuit Courts in Accra.

Bench warrant has been issued for the arrest an absentee protestor . 

The accused persons have been variously  charged with conspiracy to commit crime,  assault on public officer, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct conducive to  breach of peace, defacement of public notice and unlawful assembly.

The 39 accused persons have pleaded not guilty.

The Police categorised them into four groups compressing nine, nine, ten and twelve persons in each group.

They were marched into the two courts in the company of armed police officers. 

The accused persons are expected to reappear on October 8,  2024.

Meanwhile, Oliver Barker- Vormawor, the Convener of the Protest against illegal mining also known as galamsey , was not brought  to court following his arrest yesterday by the Police.

A  member of the defence team, Noble Nelson Amederwornu told journalists in Accra that he will be going to the Human Rights Court ( High Court  Division) to seek bail for clients.

The Democratic Hub group had staged three day protest seeking a halt on illegal mining in the country.

They were picked up by the Police at the 37 roundabout in Accra where they had  staged a protest against illegal mining.

They have been accused of also defacing political parnafenalia during the Protest.
