Accra, Sept 16, GNA – The High Commission of India in Ghana has hosted a literary event to celebrate this year’s Hindi Day in Accra.
The event, which brought together Indian citizens in the country, saw the award of prizes to winners in an essay contest, a Hindi quiz, and poem recitals.
Referred to as “Hindi Diwas,” the event highlighted the cultural and linguistic significance of the Hindi language.
This year’s event also marked the 75th anniversary of the historic moment when Hindi was first spoken in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1949.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Manish Gupta, the Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, said besides celebrating the beauty and diversity of the Hindi language, the event also aimed at imbibing the Hindi culture in second and third generation Indians living in Ghana.
He said the day highlights the language’s role in bridging diverse linguistic and cultural communities among Indians across the world.
Mr Gupta who called on Indias living in Ghana to touch roots with their culture, also urged them to avail themselves to activities organized by the High Commission for its citizens.
“It is important that we keep a close bond, touch base with our root, and transfer our culture to the next generation,” he said.
The is celebrated globally on September 14, every year, to mark the adoption of Hindi as one of India’s official languages.
