Pokrom (E/R), Aug. 23, GNA – The Rotary Club of Akuapem-Ridge, in collaboration with its partners, has organised a free cervical cancer and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) screening for about 100 women at Pokrom in the Akuapem South Municipality.
The collaborating partners were the Midwifery Exchange in Ghana, Love and Joy International, Plan Parenthood Association of Ghana, and the Akuapem South Municipal Health Directorate.
Cervical cancer can be defined as a cancer that starts in the cells of the cervix. Cervix is the lower, narrow end of uterus (womb).
Madam Emily Amponsah, Akuapem South Municipal Health Director, who is also the President of the Rotary Club of Akuapem-Ridge, said the cervical cancer was the second most common cancer among women in Ghana that needed critical attention.
She explained that cancer developed slowly over time and was caused by long-lasting infection with high-risk type of Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
The symptoms include pelvic pain or pain during sex, vaginal discharge that has a strong ordour, vaginal bleeding between periods or periods that are heavier or longer than normal.
She further said cervical cancer could cause urinary problems like difficulty urinating, kidney damage, and blood clots.
She recommended a routine HPV vaccination as well as regular health screening as some preventive measures, saying regular screening helped detected diseases early for a swift intervention or treatment.
Nana Obeng Kumi II, Makrado of Mamfe – Akuapem and Past President of Rotary Club of Akuapem-Ridge explained that the club aims to support communities in health, education, social life, peace building aspects among others.
