Accra, April 9, GNA – A Community Football Tournament that would see 24 local teams contest for a trophy and other prizes over a period of 23 weeks has commenced at the McDan Park in La, Accra.
The tournament titled: “Nye Awo Kpakpa Community Tournament” is aimed at promoting peace and cohesion, among the people in the La Dadekotopon Constituency.
It also seeks to harness talents for the first and second division leagues.
Madam Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, the Member of Parliament (MP), for La-Dadekotopon, initiator of the tournament said, in as much as sports, especially football, is a unifying activity, she intends to use the game to promote unity and togetherness ahead of the December 7 presidential and parliamentary polls.
Madam Sowah urged the electorate to embrace the spirit of mutual respect for one another through and bridge their differences to foster lasting connections.
She said female sports will also be promoted aside other sporting disciplines including volley ball and wrestling.
Present at the opening ceremony were Traditional leaders and the Turkish Ambassador, Huseyin Gungor.
All 24 teams were presented with sets of jersey, footballs and an undisclosed amount of money.
Matches in the tournament would be played every Monday at the La Salem Park.
