Ukraine: 2,200 conscript-age men prevented from fleeing amid war

Berlin, Apr. 11, (dpa/GNA) - Ukrainian border guards say they have prevented nearly 2,200 men of conscript age from leaving the country, which has been forbidden since the start of the war with Russia.

Women and children are fleeing in their hundreds of thousands, but men are called on to defend their homeland. Some male refugees had tried to bribe officials or get across the border with forged documents, the agency said.

That has led to several incidents of frostbite recorded in the Carpathians, including at the border with Romania. “Recently, there have also been several cases of bodies of men being found on the shores of waters near the border,” the agency announced without explaining how they died.

Ukrainian media reports about former constitutional judge Olexandr Tupytsky have also caused a stir. The 59-year-old had been photographed in Vienna. Ukraine has announced that it will punish those who have fled the country.
