Tel Aviv, Oct. 10, (dpa/GNA) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied media reports that Egypt had warned Israel of an imminent attack from the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu’s office described media reports that Egypt had tried to warn Israel ahead of Saturday’s deadly coordinated attacks by Hamas militants as “totally fake news.”
Israeli media previously reported that Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel had warned Netanyahu 10 days before the terror attack that “something unusual, a terrible operation” was to be expected from the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu’s office denied that, saying the Israeli prime minister had not spoken with Kamel – either directly or indirectly – since forming his current coalition government late last year.
Netanyahu’s government and the country’s security services have faced criticism and serious questions from Israelis over how intelligence failed to learn of the attacks in advance and how the military was caught so unprepared along the fortified border with Gaza.
