Al Khor, Dec. 5, (dpa/GNA) - Senegal defender Abdou Diallo wants Aliou Cisse to continue as coach despite Sunday’s World Cup exit in the last 16 against England.
Cisse had left his future at the helm of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations champions open although he had recently extended his contract until 2024. Senegal were ousted 3-0 by England after coming second in their group.
“We have full faith in him,” RB Leipzig defender Diallo said post-match. “We are united in victory and defeat. We celebrated him less than a year ago.”
Diallo said the defeat was part of a learning process as he insisted that “this is not the time for discord.”
Cisse had said after the match: “We lost a game and got knocked out, I want to learn the lessons and then we will see.”
There was plenty of praise for the team’s effort in Qatar where they were without their injured captain Sadio Mane, led by the nation’s president, Macky Sall.
“You didn’t disappoint. You are among the 16 best teams in the world and England was a tough opponent. Good luck and good fortune for the next games!” Sall tweeted.
