Accra, Dec. 5, GNA – The Ghana Wheelchair Tennis Federation (GWTF) has shared equipment to professional wheelchair tennis players.

The donation forms part of activities to mark this year’s International Day of People with Disabilities on Saturday, December 3.

The International Day, which is celebrated annually on December 3, was set aside by the United Nations in 1992, to create awareness on issues of disability, mobilise support and to improve their well-being.

In a short ceremony, Mr. Henry Larbi, Coordinator Ghana Wheelchair Tennis Federation said the federation decided to celebrate the Day, by sharing brand new wheelchairs donated by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) of the Wheelchair department.

He said ITF donated 24 wheelchairs to the Ghana Wheelchair Tennis Federation (GWTF) to support players to enable them to use it for training and other events.

He said, “earlier this year the ITF donated 12 brand new set of wheelchairs to GWTF and in October we received another 12 wheelchairs from the federation, however, due to the high cost of custom duties, we were unable to clear the goods on time”.

He thanked the President of the Ghana Tennis Federation President Mr. Isaac Aboagye Duah for supporting them with some funds for the clearing of the goods.

Mr. Emmanuel Amobire Amogoso Wheelchair Tennis Player, a beneficiary, who had an opportunity to participate in the 2022 ITF Africa Junior Camp in South Africa thanked the federation for the support and called on corporate entities to come on board.

He said, “I thank the authorities for giving us these chairs without them I wouldn’t have been where I am today, I am calling on individuals, non-governmental organisations and corporate bodies to support us since the federation alone cannot do it.

“I want to win more medals in future for Ghana so that I can be proud of my country because I love the game,” he added.

Razak Nuhu another beneficiary said the wheelchair would go a long way as they would be using it for training and other activities.
