Ayiyii returns to National Theatre this weekend

Accra, Aug. 26, GNA – After a good performance and series of calls for another show, the National Theatre of Ghana is set to stage an encore of the much anticipated theatrical piece, Ayiyii.

Fused with music, dance, and laughter, the play which was staged for a selected audience in August 2021 portrays the rich and diverse Ghanaian culture.

Directed by Mawuli Semevor with support from Stephanie Yamoah and Isaac Annor, who are in charge of dance and music respectively, the production puts all three residents groups of the National Theatre: the National Drama Company, the National Dance Company and the National Symphony Orchestra, on one stage.

The play tells a story of Mr and Mrs Yarney who give birth to a baby boy after a pregnancy that lasts 16 months and name him Ayiyii.

As a peculiar child with unique characteristics, Ayiyii demonstrates a high level of understanding with a curious mind that is always looking for alternative ways of doing things and learning everyday tricks. This leads him to embark on an expedition through the length and breadth of the country.

The acts and scenes, take the audience through a journey of rich authentic theatre, a fusion of traditional and contemporary music, dance, mime, pantomime, and dialogues.

The production relies on Ghanaian culture as well as the scheming ways of the legendary spider, Ananse.
Interspersed with comedy, music, and dances from the various regions of Ghana, the production presents costumes that are apt and rich, making it a delight to watch.

The performances are scheduled for tomorrow, August 27 and Sunday August 28, 2022 at the main auditorium of the National Theatre at 4pm and 8pm each day .
