A close look at the WPL ahead of Match-Day one

Accra, Aug. 26, GNA – The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has released fixtures for the 2022/2023 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League.

The GNA Sports took the task to analyze the chances of the clubs in the Northern and Southern zone ahead of the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier which begins on Friday, October 7 at the various league cnetres.

The 2022/23 season would see debutants Ridge City, Essiam Socrates Ladies FC, Tamale Super Ladies and Candy Soccer Academy rock shoulders with the giants with the aim to make an impact.

In the Northern zone, last season’s second place side, Pearl Pia Ladies would take on Prisons Ladies FC at home.

Pearl Pia ladies managed to finish the league with ten wins, accumulating 38 points to their credit and are eager to begin the season on a bright note as they did against Ampem Darkoa Ladies last season, beating them by a lone goal in match day one and also drawing against Fabulous Ladies in their open game of the 2020/2021 league season.

Prisons Ladies on the other hand have not had a perfect start in opening matches in the league. They lost to Supreme Ladies 2-1 in the first fixture two seasons ago and succumbed to a 5-2 defeat to relegated side, FC Savannah last season. This shows the side’s weakness in opening matches but are of high hopes they can turn things around this season.

Per the statistics between the two sides, even though Pearlpia stands a better chance of grabbing all three points, this would be a cracker to watch out for in the league.

Tamale Super Ladies, would also take on Ash-town Ladies. Even though Ash-town Ladies have much experience than the debutants, much is expected from the Tamale based side to also take up the task to grab if not a point in the game.

Ash-Town Ladies, having finished fifth on the table last year have failed to win their last two open games in the League. They were beaten by Northern Ladies by three goals to one in 2020/2021 season and failed to win against Supreme Ladies last season.

Tamale Super Ladies are of high confidence to extend the losing streak of the Kumasi based side going into the season with Ash-Town Ladies also hoping to grab a win.

Defending Champions, Ampem Darkoa Ladies would face Northern Ladies who also finished eighth last season. Ampem Darkoa Ladies have proved to be the Champions of Ghana after beating rivals Hasaacas Ladies to win the coveted trophy. The “Nanamma” lads would seek to defend the title.

The champions have not had a perfect start in the last two seasons. The giants of the Northern zone picked up a draw against Kumasi Sports Academy Ladies and also lost to Pearl Pia Ladies by a lone goal last season but later recovered and won the league. The side finished the season losing three matches after 18 matches with 39 points under their belt.

Northern Ladies, one of the top sides who have improved would be a threat to their opponent. Per their previous opening games, the Pride of the North, could pull a miracle against Ampem Darkoa as they hold a record of one win and one defeat in the last two seasons.

Supreme Ladies, who have also been superb in their previous seasons, would take on newly promoted side, Candy Soccer Academy in their match-day one clash. Supreme Ladies holds an enviable unbeaten record per their last two matches in the start of the league. This will be a match fit for the gods to decide as the new entrant would fight to announce their presence in the league with a win.

Kumasi based side, Fabulous Ladies, who managed to finish fourth in last season would battle it all out against one of the top sides in the Northern Zone, Dreamz Ladies in their match day one encounter.

Fabulous Ladies are poised of grabbing yet another point in this fixture, having recorded no losses in any of their last two games. Prince Acheampong’s side is one of the highly rated teams when it comes to attacks with the likes of Princess Owusu who finished as top goal scorer in the last season in their setup. Last season’s debutants Dreamz Ladies would be on alert to hand their opponent a defeat to continue with their hundred percent win.

Elsewhere in the Southern Zone, match-day one would witness an epic clash between Faith Ladies and Soccer Intellectuals Ladies FC. This is indeed a cracker, as both sides have not encountered any losses dating to two seasons.

Faith Ladies and Soccer Intellectuals Ladies finished second and eighth position respectively last season and have set sights to begin the season on a successful note.

Army Ladies who struggled at the beginning of the season would also take on Ladystrikers. The security side struggled in their first four matches in search of a win until Coach Ayinbire Norbert took charge of the team with a masterclass performance to finish fifth on the table. This would be a time to prove a point as they face Ladystrikers who have also lost their last two opening games in the past two seasons.

Berry Ladies, a strong competitor in the South would face five-time league champions, Hasaacas Ladies who went unbeaten last season. It would be a herculean task for Coach Mercy-Tagoe’s Berry Ladies to pick a win or point against Coach Yussif Basigi’s side though the latter have not recorded any loses at the start of the season.

Tagged as the clash of the debutants, Essiam Socrates Ladies FC would battle Ridge City as both teams would lock horns for a first premier league win.

Thunder Queens would slug it out with Police Ladies who have also been one of the favorites in the southern zone. The security side are yet to win and lose a match in their open games for the past two years with Thunder Queens also storming every part of the league with their performances in their last two seasons.

The 2022/2023 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League Season is set to commence on Friday October, 7, 2022 and expected to end on Monday May, 22, 2023.
