Appiatse (W/R), Aug.17, GNA – Former President John Dramani Mahama has said support to the Appiatse explosion victims has declined and appealed to organisations, philanthropists, and individuals to continue with the assistance to bring their lives back to normalcy.

During a visit to the victims at the Appiatse Disaster Relief Camp on Tuesday to commiserate with them and assess the extent of damage, Mr Mahama said the government had done well in terms of support “but I believe the property they have lost should be taken into consideration.”

“About eight months have passed since the incident happened and we can see that most of the things the government promised have been put in place. I am happy to be here to witness this day,” Former President Mahama said.

“We have secured funds for the housing project for the Appiatse Community but as the spokesperson for the victims touched on their well-being and the challenges they go through daily. The victims deserve some form of compensation, and the President should intervene.”

The Former President presented 500 bags of rice,100 boxes of canned tomatoes, 50 boxes of mackerel, 50 boxes of cooking oil, and 100 pieces of mattresses to the victims.

He also added GH¢5000.00 to settle the medical bills of those injured and pledged to offer more support on his next visit.

Mr Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, the Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni-Valley, appealed for more resources for the Appiatse Disaster Relief Committee to ensure they worked effectively for the wellbeing of the people.

Dr Isaac Dasmani, the Municipal Chief Executive, Prestea Huni-Valley, expressed gratitude to the former President for the support and said 498 people were affected by the explosion but six were still in critical condition.

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, January 20, 2022, along the Bogoso-Bawdie road when a vehicle transporting explosives to a mining company exploded, killing14 people and injuring many others.
