Former President of Sierra Leone visits African Court

Tema, July 24, GNA – Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, former President of Sierra Leone has called on the President of the African Court on Human and People’s Rights Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud at Arusha, Tanzania.

Lady Justice Aboud reiterated African Court’s commitment to reshape human rights justice, which calls for all stakeholders to build an alliance towards three main achievements on the African continent.

The three main targets are to pursue quality justice, place States at the heart of the discourse on human rights justice, and devise strategies to promote Africa’s contribution to overcome the global and regional democracy crisis.

Lady Justice Aboud in a paper to the Ghana News Agency in Tema on the visit said in the past two years, the African Court had adjusted itself to the fast-changing nature of international human rights justice, especially in dealing with the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

She noted that the African Court must also grapple with the crucial need to capitalize on its now well-established operational capacity to harness quality and greater authority.

“Realising this aim necessarily involves both internal institutional reforms, but certainly requires external stakeholders to reinvent their judicial engagement in a way that helps the African Court unleash its full justice-delivering potential, as envisaged by the African Union and fervently awaited by Africans,” she said.

Lady Justice Aboud commended former President Koroma for his commitment to deepen the human rights protection.

Former President Koroma stressed that issues such as the refugee crisis, poverty, transnational organized crime, terrorism and violence against women, and efforts to expand access to health and education were all characterized by a struggle for inclusion.

He also applauded the African Court for protecting human rights of Africans and expanding the scope of security through the judicial jurisprudence.
