Accra, July 19, GNA – The Bekwai Circuit Court has remanded a commercial driver into police custody for causing danger to road users.
Daniel Shiakah pleaded guilty with the explanation that he did not have a place to park.
He was convicted of unauthorised parking, picking passengers elsewhere and causing danger to other road users but sentence was deferred till July 20, 2021.
Police Chief Inspector David Amofa told the Court presided over by Mr Mark Diboro Tairima that on July 14, 2022, at about 1541 hours, the Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) whilst on motor traffic management duty within the Bekwai Township, spotted Shaikah in charge of Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus with the registration number GW 5631-22 disregarding the safety of other road users.
The court heard that he had parked at unauthorized place, picking passengers, thereby causing danger to other road users.
The prosecution said when the offences were pointed out to him, he became offended and exhibited gross disrespect to the arresting officers.
Chief Inspector Amofa said in order not to create inconvenience to the passengers on board, the police retained his driver’s licence and issued him with a note/chit to go and alight the passengers and report on July15, 2022, for the next line of action.
The action of the driver prompted the passengers to abuse the police verbally.
Chief Inspector Amofa said Shaikah who refused to continue the journey, parked the vehicle at the precinct of the MTTD yard leaving the passengers stranded.
He said the driver was, therefore, charged with the offences and put before court.
