Sunyani, July 12, GNA – The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has organised a capacity building training workshop on the new Ghana Education Service (GES) standard-based curriculum for the teaching staff of its Basic School.
The two-day workshop was the first of its kind since the establishment of UENR and was facilitated by the University’s Centre for Professional Development (CePDev) in collaboration with the Sunyani West Municipal Education Directorate.
It was to equip the teachers to understand the features of the new curriculum and enhance their capacities to facilitate effective teaching and learning to attain improved and higher academic performance of the pupils and students.
It was also to sharpen participants’ skills on the curriculum which is Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) based to enable them to impact well on the pupils and students.
Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, the Vice-Chancellor of the UENR in an opening remark stressed the relevance of the workshop for both teachers, pupils and students, saying it would expand the tentacles of participants cognitively in the educational field and help them to embrace the rapid changes occurring in the various academic disciplines.
Professor Mrs. Mercy Derkyi, Head of the CePDev, later in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the University was poised to build and enhance the capacities of its teachers and keep them abreast with the new and standard-based teaching and learning methods.
“The University helping the teachers to be conversant with contemporary issues would not only reflect in the academic performance of the children, but also improve the University’s patronage and increase the Basic School’s enrollment”, she stated.
Prof. Mrs. Derkyi said the Centre in collaboration with the GES might be of help to a private Basic School that would request facilitators for such a training workshop.
