Bibiani Municipal Assembly plants 400,000 trees to combat climate change

Bibiani (WN/R), June12, GNA – The District Manager of the Forestry Commission in Bibiani, Mr Eric Aware says about 400, 000 different species of trees are expected to be planted in and outside forest reserves in the Municipality.

The species for planting included timber species, shade trees, multi-purpose leguminous trees, ornamental, and fruit trees.

The initiative adds to numerous interventions by both state and private entities to Green Ghana and avert the creeping effect of climate change in the country.

Mr Asare noted how important it had become to mobilise for a greener Ghana.

The District Manager indicated that some of the seedlings have been distributed to various communities, corporate institutions and individuals for planting.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality, Mr Alfred Amoah was unhappy with the sharp depletion of the terrestrial ecosystem in the country through chainsaw operation, timber logging, illegal mining activities, rain storm, natural death of trees and farming activities.

He noted how frantic efforts should be made by the citizenry to plant trees.” Each citizen should plant at least one tree”, to protect and safeguard the environment.

Nana Anaafi Ababio, the Kontihene of Anhwiaso Traditional Council who chaired the occasion on behalf of the Paramount Chief of the area, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi ll urged the public to take good care of the trees after the seedlings have been planted.

The Green Ghana initiative is under the distinguished leadership of the President and formed part of government’s aggressive afforestation programme to restore lost forest cover and contribute to the global efforts to fight climate change.
