Council on Persons with Disability receives computers, accessories

Accra, June 11, GNA – The National Council on Persons with Disability has received some computers and accessories to aid their administrative work after two years of improvisation.

The Council recruited personnel two years ago to augment their staff strength but had to rely largely on the staff’s personal laptops to carry out daily office duties.

The items received were ten desktop computers, two laptops, and a multipurpose photocopier that does scanning and printing.

The gadgets, worth over GHC80,000.00, were donated by the Good Causes Foundation, a charity wing of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), to the Executive Secretary and Board Members of the Council.

The National Lotto Act, 2006(Act 722) mandates the NLA “with the object of providing care and protection for the physically or mentally afflicted, the needy, the aged, orphans and destitute children.”

Madam Amma Frimpong, the Deputy Coordinator of the Foundation, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said they identified the Council as one of the institutions that needed equipment to facilitate their daily administrative works after some engagements.

“We see the Council as a mother-figure working in the interest of all persons with disabilities and one of the major challenges the NLA seeks to solve is the day-to-day administration inefficiencies,” she said.

“If you don’t have the necessary tools to work with, it makes the work difficult. We are in a technological world, and they need to transfer information and these gadgets would help their work,” Madam Frimpong added.

She said the Authority is considering plans to give out scholarships to persons with disability to improve their expertise and assist those into businesses with start-ups.

Madam Esther Akua Gyamfi, the Executive Secretary, National Council on Persons with Disability, said the items would help the Council in their policy formulation and implementation and in reaching out to the 26 categories of persons with disabilities.

She assured the Foundation that the items would be put to good use.

Madam Mawunyo Yakor-Dagbah, a Governing Board Member, also told the Ghana News Agency, she was elated the Council had received the equipment, adding that they would help in coordinating disability issues across the country.

She said they were not going to only receive from the NLA but help the Authority in improving disability inclusion at their workplaces and make the buildings disability friendly.

The National Council on Persons with Disability is the State Institution that steers the affairs of people living with disabilities and was established in 2009 by an Act of Parliament, the Persons with Disability Act 2006, (Act 715).
