Chief urges residents to plant seedlings received

Ave-Dakpa (V/R), Jun 11, GNA – Togbe Nyameko Glakpe V, the Paramount Chief of Dakpa Traditional Area, has advised residents of the area to plant the tree seedlings received for the Green Ghana campaign.

He said the cost of the seedlings for the national exercise was high and it would be wrong to collect the seedlings and failed to plant.

He said the exercise was a serious one and would not allow residents to thwart the national course of revitalising the forests and the environment.

Togbe Glakpe gave the advice during a ceremony held at Dakpa to mark the Green Ghana Day Celebration.

He observed that most people who collected the trees last year failed to plant them and those who did plant failed to take proper care of them for growth.

The Akatsi North District Chief Executive, Mr Simon Peter Ofosu, noted that, the benefits of trees to humanity was innumerable and urged all to take advantage of the opportunity being offered by government to plant trees for the restoration of the depleted forest cover in the district.

He urged all those who would collect the seedlings to ensure that they plant and take care of them for the achievement of the intended purpose.

Mr Mawuli Abusah, the Akatsi North District Director of Agriculture, said the forest cover was depleting in an alarming rate resulting in global warming and consequent changes in the rainfall pattern.

He, therefore, appealed to citizens to embrace the project for the restoration of the depleted forest cover.

In all, 700 Ceiba, 3,000 Mahogany and Affram and 8,000 Acacia and Nim seedlings have been given to the Akatsi North District for distribution and planting.
