Ajumako (C/R), June 10, GNA – The Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam (AEE) District Assembly, on Friday, led a tree planting exercise in two Senior High Schools in the area to mark the Green Ghana Day.
The exercise held at Bisease Senior High School (BISECO) and the Mando Senior High School (MANSEC), opened the district’s agenda to plant at least 13,000 tree seedlings as the nation planted some 20 million trees under the Green Ghana project this year.
The Green Ghana Project is an agenda to restore Ghana’s dwindling forest cover by planting at least 100 million trees by 2024.
The maiden edition of the project last year, saw the country planting some seven million trees.
This year’s exercise is on the theme: “Mobilising for a greener future.”
Rev Emmanuel Ransford Kwesi Nyarko, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mrs Sabina Aba Wilson, the District Education Director as well as management and students of the two schools participated in the exercise.
Rev Nyarko, speaking at the brief ceremony, indicated that the cycle between trees and humans showed how critical trees were to the existence of people.
He said most of the trees planted were economic trees, which would yield economic benefits for the district in years to come.
The DCE observed that despite the devastating effect of rainstorm, the numerous trees on the premises of the two schools had preserved the environment hence the need to plant more to retain their pristine landscape.
“Some people did it for us, but we are cutting them down. If we don’t replace these trees, we will bequeath to our future generations with a dire situation,” he noted.
“This tells me that what the President is doing will definitely yield fruits in the future,” he stressed, and admonished the public to fully take part in the exercise and ensure that every tree planted survived.
Rev Nyarko gave assurance that the Assembly would follow through with the District Education Directorate to make sure that every tree planted in the various schools was well nurtured.
In the spirit of sustainability, he said his outfit would collaborate with the Forestry Commission to make the tree planting a continuous exercise in the district.
Mrs Wilson said it was important for students to take good care of their environment for their own well-being.
“When we plant the trees, it is our duty to ensure that they grow well. Every tree you plant today make sure you water them to grow along with the trees,” she stated.
