Britain’s Boris Johnson wins confidence vote sparked by Partygate

London, June 6, (PA Media/dpa/GNA) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has won a confidence vote and can remain in office, thanks to the backing of 211 lawmakers from his Conservative Party, versus 148 who voted against him.

“And therefore, I can announce that the parliamentary party does have confidence in Boris Johnson,” said Member of Parliament Graham Brady, announcing the results.

The confidence vote was largely prompted by growing public unhappiness with Johnson, after a trickle of revelations about parties in government offices in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, when Johnson’s government had told people to stay home and avoid social contacts.

By surviving the confidence vote, Johnson cannot face another such challenge for at least another year.
Many political commentators are however saying that losing the backing of 148 lawmakers from his own party could weaken him.
