Accra, June 06, GNA—The Police say two out of the four military uniformed men involved in the Shukura land dispute are not soldiers.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Akrofi Ansah, Dansoman District Commander told the Ghana News Agency on Monday that only one of the four suspects was with the Military.
He said the Military man together with two suspects have been arrested, however, the fourth suspect is on the run.
Four men in military uniform on Saturday clashed with some youth at Shukura over a parcel of land.
In a viral video, some young men were seen having a heated argument with the uniformed men, after which they went on to vandalise a Ford Explorer belonging to one of them.
DSP Ansah said on Saturday, the soldier together with three other men all in military uniform, went to Shukura with an excavator to demolish structures on a land under dispute.
He said their attempt was met with resistance from some youth in the area, leading to a clash.
The DSP said Mr Owusu a.k.a “Rocky,” driver of the excavator drove off the scene when the argument started.
He said the angry youth followed “Rocky,” threw stones at him, and broke the back windscreen of the excavator.
However, the driver escaped unharmed and sought safety at the Dansoman District Police Headquarters.
The Police said after “Rocky’s” escape, the confrontations continued, and the soldier shot one of the opposers at his left ankle.
He said the gun pellets also caused injury to some other people at the scene.
DSP Ansah said the military man arrested the man he shot and brought him to the Police with complaint that he had damaged his vehicle.
The military man explained to the Police that he shot the victim out of self defence.
The Police, however, arrested and detained the soldier, and later transferred him to the Military for detention.
“He is supposed to be brought here today to assist with investigations,” the DSP added.
He said the two suspects who posed as military men were arrested by the civilians, badly beaten up and brought to the Dansoman Police station.
DSP Ansah said the civilian who was shot in the left ankle was sent to the Dansoman Polyclinic for some of the gun pellets to be removed.
The Police said the injured victim was later transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to receive further medical attention.
