Court restraints organisers of June 4 “armed demonstration”

Accra, June 4, GNA - The Accra High Court has on Friday restrained organisers of a demonstration with participants expected to arm themselves for self-protection.

This was after the Police filed a motion on notice at the Criminal High Four to prohibit the organisers of the intended “armed demonstration.”

A press release signed by Superintendent of Police Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs Unit, Accra and copied the Ghana News Agency, said: “The organisers, represented by Benjamin Darko, were duly served with the Motion on Notice which application was heard on June 3, 2022, at the Criminal High Court ‘4.”

It said: “After hearing of the application, the Court granted an order to restrain the organisers, their agents, assigns and whoever is claiming through them from embarking on the armed demonstration as had been intended.”

“We would like to assure the public that the Police Service will not be an impediment in the way of any individuals or groups in the exercise of their right to demonstrate as long as it is within the limits of the laws of the country.”

The Service has reiterated its effort to continue enforcing the law and ensure the safety and security of all persons in the country.

A group reportedly wrote to the Ghana Police Service seeking to go on a three-day demonstration starting from June 4, 2022, but with its own private security protection.

The group is said to be led by Mr Oliver Barker-Vormawor, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, Benjamin Darko and Godsbrain Blessing, alias Captain Smart, a broadcaster.
