Accra, June 03, GNA — The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) and the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) are unhappy with the Ministry of Education for inaugurating a new Ghana Education Service (GES) Council without representations from both Bodies.
“Both CCG and GCBC are important stakeholders of education in Ghana. We, therefore, wish to state our displeasure in this matter. We appeal to the Ministry to kindly respect the roles that CCG and GCBC have played and continue to play in the development of education in the country,” they said.
A statement signed by Rev. Dr. Justice Adjei K. Lawson, Vice Chairman, CCG; Rev Dr Cyril G. K. Fayose, General Secretary, CCG; Most Rev. Philip Naameh, President, GCBC; Rev. Fr. Lazarus Anondee, Secretary General, GCBC, said all critical decisions that were taken on education in the country should be done through consensus building with stakeholders like the Faith-Based Organisations.
It said the leadership of CCG and GCBC had received a draft document called “Universal Guidelines for Secondary Schools, ” that spelt out guidelines for all Senior High Schools in the nation.
The statement said Faith-Based Organisations, which played a pivotal role in Ghana’s education, had not been involved or officially notified about any such document containing guidelines for Secondary School Education in Ghana.
It also reminded Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister of Education, that the joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and the Missions had not been signed.
The statement, therefore, appealed to the Minister to quickly sign the MoU for the smooth running of schools, adding that no Guideline for Secondary School education should replace the MoU, which both the Missions and the Ministry had put together.
It assured Ghanaians that CCG and GCBC would continue with public education, Christian advocacy and prayers for peace, harmony, and justice in Ghana.
“In so doing we will continue to be non-partisan and be guided by the principles of the Holy Bible. We wish all Ghanaians well in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” the statement said.
