Aid agencies warn that hunger crises are coming to a head

Berlin, Jun. 2, (dpa/GNA) - Two German aid organizations have warned of worsening hunger crises in the wake of the war in Ukraine.

Welthungerhilfe and the children’s relief organisation Terre des Hommes called for urgent action at a joint presentation in Berlin on Thursday.

They said governments need to react to what they called “the fatal interplay” of wars, the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, the effects of climate change and a worsening hunger catastrophe.

They said the international community is facing a global systemic crisis. The German government should use this year’s G7 presidency to commit to binding initiatives on global food security together with its partners, the organizations added.

“We must not allow a repeat of the hunger crisis of 2007/2008 when there were almost 1 billion people starving in the world,” said Mathias Mogge of Welthungerhilfe. “Global food security should be a top political priority.”

The German government, together with the other G7 countries, must provide an additional $14 billion per year for food security in order to defeat global hunger, he said.
