Accra, May 31, GNA – SheRising, a non-profit organisation, has donated sanitary towels to girls at the Pokuase Methodist Basic One and Two School in the Ga North Municipal Assembly, Accra, as part of efforts to promote menstrual hygiene among girls.

The 600 pieces of sanitary towels were donated in commemoration of the 2022 Menstrual Hygiene Day.

The Day is marked on May 28, every year across the world, as an annual awareness day to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management on the global level.

It was initiated by the German-based Non-Governmental Organisation; WASH United, in 2013 and observed for the first time in 2014.

As an annual event, it has the goal of breaking taboos surrounding menstruation and raising awareness on the importance of good menstrual hygiene management worldwide.

SheRising organisation, with the primary goal of supporting young girls to rise in their endeavours, presented the more than 600 pieces of sanitary towels to girls to ensure they had the peace of mind to study and build their self-confidence.

Mrs Edith Ansah, Founder, of the Organisation, during the presentation at the school premises, said the inaccessibility and unaffordability of menstruation towels limited most girls from attending school during the period, especially in low-income areas.

That, she said, affected their studies and sometimes their self-confidence.

“In most schools, girls do not go to school due to lack of sanitary pads and ignorance about practising hygiene during the period of their flow,” she said.

Mrs Ansah expressed worry over the hikes in the prices of goods, which had also affected sanitary pads, and called on stakeholders to ensure menstrual products were accessible and affordable to girls, especially the less privileged.

She expressed gratitude to enterprises and individuals, through whose support the organisation was able to raise money for the towels.

Ms Christiana Ayikailey Ankrah, the Headmistres of the School, who received the items, commended SheRising for the immense support.
