Wreckage of German plane discovered in Croatia

Budapest, May 30, (dpa/GNA) – Croatian search teams have discovered the wreckage of the German small plane, that disappeared from radar on Sunday after taking off from the coastal Croatian city of Split and heading towards Germany with four people on board.

There was initially no information on the fate of the pilot and the three passengers, Croatian media reported, citing the HGSS rescue service.

The plane was found in the hamlet of Brocanac, 100 kilometres south of Zagreb, on Monday morning. The search had been complicated by bad weather, and drones had been used due to the difficult terrain at the crash site, rescuers said.

The German air traffic control’s search and rescue service reported the disappearance of the Cessna 182 aircraft on Sunday afternoon. At the time, it was on its return flight to the Bayer Leverkusen Air Sports Club in the western German city of Leverkusen.

“Our hopes, prayers and thoughts are with the pilot and his family,” the club said in a statement on Sunday. It said the pilot was an experienced aviator and a “much appreciated, popular and dedicated member” of the club. The three passengers were acquaintances of the pilot.
