Beijing: US is exaggerating threat from China

Beijing, May 27, (dpa/GNA) - The US is spreading false information and exaggerating the threat from China in the view of the Chinese government.

In a response to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s keynote speech on China, Foreign Office spokesman Wang Wenbin on Friday further accused the US of interfering in China’s internal affairs and discrediting its domestic and foreign policies.

“The purpose is to contain and suppress China’s development and maintain the US hegemony and power,” Wang Wenbin told the press in Beijing in a lengthy response.

“The so-called ‘rules-based international order’ of the US side is, as anyone with a discerning eye can see, nothing more than a family law and rules formulated by the US side and a handful of countries, maintaining only the so-called US-led order,” he said.

In his speech, Blinken had presented China as the biggest challenge to the international order in the long run, despite the acute crisis caused by the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine.

China, he said, “is the only country with both the intent to reshape the international order, and increasingly, the economic, diplomatic, military and technological power to do it.”

However, Blinken also tempered his criticism of China with an appeal to the importance of peaceful cooperation. “We are not looking for conflict or new Cold War,” Blinken said. “To the contrary, we’re determined to avoid both.”
