1991-year group of Accra Academy launches 2022 Speech and Prize-giving Day

Accra, May 10, GNA – The 1991-year group of Accra Academy (Bleoo) on Saturday launched the 2022 Speech and Prize-giving Day and cut a sod for the refurbishment of the school’s Science Resource Centre.

The speech day is expected to be held on October 29, 2022, while the renovation project is anticipated to be completed in September. The entire programme being sponsored by the ‘91 group is estimated to cost GHc800,000.

Mrs Efua Brew Mensah, the Deputy Chairperson of the Planning Committee of the group in an address read on behalf of the President said in the recent past, it had become the tradition for year groups to embark on a project as part of their responsibility to host the school’s annual speech and prize-giving day.

She said the mantle fell on them during the 90th speech and prize-giving day programme.

Mrs Mensah stated: “We are inspired by Denzel Washington’s quote; ‘At the end of the day, it’s not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished… it’s about who you’ve lifted, who you’ve made better and it’s about what you’ve given back.”

She said the group also share the belief by Mike Satterfield that: “Even if you just change one life, you’ve changed the world forever,” adding; “This is our credence and this we will strive to achieve.”

The Deputy Chairperson called on all past students of Accra Academy to support the cause of the ’91 group to give back to their alma mater and together they could build a better Ghana.

Mr Kofi Amoa-Awuah, the President of the Accra Academy Old Boys’ Association (AAOBA) applauded the ’91 group for accepting the challenge to host this year’s speech day because it was a big and onerous task.

He pledged AAOBA’s support to the group as it has been doing for every group that takes up a project.

Mr Amoa-Awuah informed past students in and outside the country that it was a challenge to the Association in pooling people together, however, he said, efforts were being made to bridge that gap among year groups of the school.

Mr Emmanuel Fiemawhle, the Headmaster of Accra Academy said the decision by the ’19-year group to renovate the Science Resource Centre as their anniversary project cannot be over-emphasized, especially in this era of science, technology, mathematics and innovation, which was the driving force of today’s global world and development.

He expressed gratitude to them for accepting the challenge for the gesture and for also taking it on themselves to sponsor the speech and prize-giving day celebration, adding; “This tells you the quantum of workload on them.”

Mr Fiemawhle said over the years old boys have been of tremendous help to the school in infrastructure development staff and students’ awards, provision of teaching and learning materials, staff motivation, and many others.

“This enthusiasm among old boys has impacted positively to a significant extent in the enrolment and development of the school – this evidence of request made by old boys to undertake one project or the other.

“And of cause the large candidate of the BECE students who choose the school as their first choice is enough evidence of the trust and confidence parents have in the school to meet the expectation or provide quality education to their wards,” he stated.

The headmaster thanked all old boys who have contributed in one way or the other to bring the learning institution that far.

“Whilst appreciating the contributions of the year groups, individuals and corporate organizations in addressing the challenges of the school, I wished to humbly appeal for more robust and conscious efforts in engaging the wider spectrum of year groups and individuals who are still not part of the team and are yet to join the few selfless individuals who have dedicated themselves to make Accra Academy what we want to do so,” Mr Fiemawhle said.
