Sunyani, March.03, GNA – Road accidents in the Bono Region declined in 2021 compared to 2020, Police Superintendent Stephen Tenkorang, the Regional Commander of the Motto Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has revealed.

He said road crashes in 2021 was 190, while 2020 recorded 258,adding that death tolls also reduced from 113 in 2020 to 88 in 2021, with 229 injured in 2021.

He expressed worry about the increased number of motorcycle deaths recorded in the region last year, which stood at 53 out of the 88 deaths recorded in the accidents, while four of the total deaths were through pedestrian knockdowns.

He Tenkorang cited particularly human errors, including over-speeding, wrong over-taking and drink-driving as some of the major causes of road accidents.

Superintendent Tenkorang observed that over-speeding by drivers and motor riders in Sunyani contributed greatly to the high rate of pedestrian knockdowns and road crashes.

He advised drivers and motor riders in the town to desist from such unprofessional practices to ensure the safety of passengers and the general public.

He entreated drivers to be patient when driving through the town and also obey road safety regulations by maintaining the 30 kilometres per hour speed limit, especially around areas such as schools and hospitals.

He said the MTTD also arrested riders with unregistered motorcycles as well as those over-speeding, and riding without a license plate and helmets.

He said the culprits were processed for Court and fined GHC900 each, while those who could not afford the fines were imprisoned,
