Department of Agriculture embarks on pre-season farmers rally in Akatsi South

Akatsi (VR), March 1, GNA – The Akatsi South Department of Agriculture has embarked on an annual Pre-Season Farmers’ Rally to address issues affecting farmers’ productivity.

The rally also serves as a platform to draw farmers attention to existing Government Flagship Programmes such as Planting for Food & Jobs-PFJ, Rearing for Food & Jobs- RFJ, Planting for Export & Rural Development-PERD, and others.

Mr Charles Grunitzky, the Akatsi South Municipal Director of Agriculture, told the Ghana News Agency that the various departments, including Crops Services Women in Agric and Extension Services, would address the issues of the farmers .

Some beneficiary communities for the event included Atsiekpi, Adeheta Dzinakpoe – Mikadokope, Dzuepe, Tsigbene, and Lume Avete.

Issues such as bush fire prevention and control, climate change concern, relevance of keeping records, Vegetables and fruit crop production, child labour, Covid-19, Education of Poultry and livestock farmers on Biosecurity, Public Health Education on Zoonotic diseases, Immunisation and Prophylactic treatment of small ruminants and Education on meat hygiene, among others, would be looked at.

The rest are, the use of locally available materials for livestock housing construction, use of locally available feed ingredients in feed preparation for livestock, sensitisation on household nutrition, food safety and hygiene, post-harvest handling of fruits, vegetables, and arable crops, sensitisation on home gardening, value addition to farm produce -Processing, Packaging and labelling and Marketing, encouraging the use of improved seeds, and safe use of Agro-chemicals in vegetables and arable crop production.

Pre-season Farmers’ Rally is carried out between January and March of every year during periods favourable to selected communities.
