Maiden edition of Samartex Golf Tournament tees-off on March 3

Accra, Feb 28, GNA – The maiden edition of the Samartex Golf Tournament will tee-off at the Samartex Golf Club, Samreboi in the Western Region of Ghana from Thursday, March 3.

The tournament dubbed ‘Mahogany Open’ is a shared vision and passion to project the sports and develop young talents in the sport.

The four-day competition would be opened to all valid members of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Ghana who would be competing for the GH₡80,000 prize money.

The competition shall be played in accordance with the rules of golf as approved by the Royal and Ancient (R&A) Golf Club of St. Andrews, the United States Golf Association (USGA), PGA, and the local rules of the Samartex Golf Club.

The competition would be organised by Samartex Timber and Plywood Company Limited, located in Samreboi, and Safari valley Resort, Located in Adukrom, Okere District, Eastern Region.

According to them, the development of the game of golf is at their heart therefore, they had come up with the ‘Amateur to Pro-Golfer’ concept to give the opportunity to all.

The first phase of the concept would harness and develop young talent, especially less privileged kids within the catchment working areas of Samartex and Safari Valley. This had already kick-started with kids between the ages of eight to 16years registered and under training.

The second phase would be on a much higher professional level, with the vision of hosting two of the biggest golf tournament opens in the country; The Mahogany Open and The Obotan Open Respectively.

The Obotan Open is scheduled to follow the Mahogany Open and will tee-off at the Safari Valley Golf Course, Adukrom, Eastern Region.

The vision was to make these open tournaments a household annual affair with Professional and Amateur Golfers competing at the highest level.
