Ukraine declares 30-day state of emergency amid stand-off with Russia

Kiev, Feb 23, (dpa/GNA) – A 30-day state of emergency has been declared in Ukraine, in light of military tensions with Russia at the eastern border, said Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the country’s security council, on Wednesday.

The move could mean Ukrainians, will be ordered to stay home or placed under curfew.

The country is on edge after Russia’s decision this week to recognize two separatist regions in Ukraine’s east as independent countries and authorize Russian military forces to enter to prevent what the Kremlin insists is attempted genocide against ethnic Russians.
