EIWUG shares Easter/Valentine package to members

Kenyasi (Ahafo) , Feb. 16, GNA – The leadership of the Extractive Industry Workers Union Ghana (EIWUG) on Monday shared Easter/Valentine packages to member workers of the Newmont Ghana Gold Limited (NGGL).

This is in conformity with the Union’s welfare policy of giving back to members.

Last year, the Union gave each member a tabletop fridge, but this year, as part of the Easter/Valentine Bonanza, each member received a 32-inch flat-screen television set.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the NGGL Ahafo South Mine at Kenyasi in the Asutifi North District, Ahafo Region, Mr. Victor Asare Gyapong, the Executive Director of the Union, said the package was in fulfilment of the Union’s policy of prioritizing members’ socio-economic interest by giving an amount of certain value in the form of hampers to them on occasions like Valentine Day and Easter.

Mr. Gyapong said the essence was to bring value and innovation into the activities of EIWUG, since “the core function and operation of a Union is not always about bargaining for wage increment and if not, strikes, go slow and picketing among other labour actions”.

“So EIWUG is giving the unionization of workers a new face by bringing innovation to the union space, ”he said.

Mr. Gyapong stressed that the welfare of every member was paramount to EIWUG, saying because of that the leadership had gone the extra mile to purchase life insurance policies for all members.

He explained that the insurance policy covered the member, spouse, parents and five children, saying GHS5000.00 would be paid in the event of the death of a member, any of his/her parent and spouse while GHC1,000.00 would be given upon the death of a child.

On behalf of the leadership and members, Mr. Gyapong applauded the Management of NGGL for ensuring that the COVID-19 protocols were observed at its operational sites.

He added that NGGL provided materials needed for preventing spread of the viral disease, saying as a result no worker of the company had lost his/her life during the pandemic.

As part of this year’s ‘bonanza’, the Union also presented a 32-inch flat-screen television set and a tabletop fridge to the District Labour Office.

Nana Kwabena Sarpong, the District Labour Officer, who received the items, expressed gratitude to the EIWUG for the gesture and appealed to the Union for an air-conditioner as “the heat in the office during the afternoons , especially in the dry season is unbearable”.
