Minister confirms sacking of GACL Boss

Accra, Feb.10, GNA – Mr Hassan Tampuli, Deputy Minister for Transport has confirmed the dismissal of Mr Yaw Kwakwa, Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) per a leaked letter written to the Board Chairman of the Company.

However, Mr Kwakwa has maintained that he is unaware of the termination of his appointment as the Managing Director of GACL and still at post when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Transport visited the Mc Dan Private Terminal at the Terminal 1 of the Kotoka international Airport.

Mr Tampuli in an interview with the media in Parliament House confirmed the sacking of Mr Kwakwa but hinted that it was yet to be communicated to Mr Kwakwa officially by the Board of GACL.

He explained that since the GACL is a limited liability company and regulated under the Company’s Act, the termination of the appointment of Mr Kwakwa can only be done by the Board of the GACL.

He explained that per the letter addressed to the Board Chairman to convene a board meeting at which all the necessary steps would be undertaken in pursuant to the company’s Act.

There are speculations that the dismissal of Mr Kwakwa is as result of a tussle between the Ghana Airport Company and newly established private jet terminal operated by McDan Aviation.

With the last few weeks, there has been back and forth between GACL and McDan Aviation over the operation of this private jet terminal at the Kotoka International Airport.

Mr Yaw Kwakwa was sacked per a letter signed by Transport Minister Mr Kwaku Ofori Asiamah dated January 31st, 2022, stating that, “His Excellency the President” has directed that his appointment as the Managing Director of the GACL be terminated. The letter did not state the reasons for his sack.
