Monrovia, Jan 20, (dpa/GNA) – At least 29 people are dead in Monrovia, after an attempt to rob worshippers leaving a church ceremony sparked a stampede, according to a hospital source and media reports.
The worshippers were leaving an open air church service in the Liberian capital’s New Kru Town district on Wednesday, when the robbers showed up, sparking scuffles and panic.
According to media reports, some of the robbers were armed. Dpa received confirmation on Thursday.
The hospital source also said there were 70 people hospitalized in critical condition after the incident.
Liberian President George Manneh Weah declared three days of mourning due to the tragedy.
