Asiwa (Ash), Jan. 06, GNA – An adolescent health fair has been held for over 100 adolescent girls including girls with disability at Asiwa in the Bosome Freho District.
The fair which was put together by the Alliance for Reproductive Health Rights (ARHR) in collaboration with Responsibilities Initiatives Ghana (RRIG) sought to sensitise the girls on their sexual and reproductive health rights and prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
It formed part of a project dubbed, “Adolescent Girl Project” which is being implemented in the District by the two organisations with funding from the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA).
The participants were educated on the causes and prevention of HIV/AIDs and other sexually transmitted diseases while they engaged in various games such as ludo, oware, musical chairs, ampe, and singing competition.
The goal was to capture their attention through the games and provide them with the right information on services available for them in health facilities and how to keep themselves as young girls.
Those with disabilities were also taught how to stay safe from sexual abuse and gender-based violence because of their vulnerability.
Madam Victoria Adomako, a Health Professional who led the discussions spoke about the dangers associated with STIs with emphasis on HIV/AIDS.
She reminded the girls that they had the right to say no to the opposite sex when they make sexual advances at them, saying that they would endure the stigma and inconvenience in the event of pregnancy.
She counseled them to focus on their education and desist from amorous relationships that could derail their education as young people.
They should aspire to secure a better future for themselves by avoiding peers whose company could only lead them astray, she advised.
