Accra, Dec.20, GNA— Miss Aisha Bawa, a registered midwife at the Manhyia District Hospital in the Ashanti Region, has been adjudged the 2021 National Best Nurse /Midwife by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
She beats nine other finalists from across the country for the award at this year’s GRNMA’s 2nd Annual National Awards Night held in Accra.
All the ten finalists were honoured for their exceptional contributions to the nursing and midwifery profession.
Miss Bawa holds a Diploma in Nursing from the Kumasi Nursing and Midwifery Training College and a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
She was honored for being a champion and a focal person in Newborn care at her place of work and an Ashanti regional facilitator in the Helping Babies Breath (HHB) and Essential Care for Every Baby (ECEB) project, making her a lead health promoter in Maternal and Newborn care issues on Radio and Television.
Miss Bawa took home a brand-new car valued over GHS 100,000, a laptop and a citation.
Dr Patrick Kuma- Aboagye, Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), who was speaking at the event, commended all nurses and midwives, especially those working in the remotest areas for their selfless sacrifices to humanity.
He lauded them for ensuring the continuity of essential services amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, saying “Thank you for the major role you play to keep the pandemic under control”.
Dr Kuma- Aboagye tasked the nurses and midwives to give-off their best to ensure that Ghana attained Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.
He stressed that the GHS would continue to cooperate with the GRNMA in their fight for better conditions of service.
The Director General said the Service was also working towards the “professionalisation of the nursing and midwifery profession.”
Mrs Perpetual Ofori, President of the GRNMA, also commended nurses and midwives for their contributions to improved healthcare delivery and urged them to always keep up ethical and professional standards.
Ten other nurses and midwives from across the country were rewarded with certificates and citations for excelling in their line of work in their various regions.
There are: Wonder Vitashie from the Volta Region, Mavis Nketiaa Nketia from the Eastern Region, Christiana Adobes Koranteng, Greater Accra, Freda Serwaa Asiamash Horsu, Central region, Bernice Zigli Brong Ahafo region.
The rest are: Clothilda Gameti , Northern Region, Anthony Pulamda Gariba, Upper East, Ali Adams, Upper West and Bridget Adjoa Quainoo from the Western Region.
