Taliban begin removing female portraits from billboards, shop fronts

Islamabad, Dec 20, (dpa/GNA) – The Taliban authorities in Afghanistan have begun removing images of women, used for advertising on billboards and shopfronts in the capital Kabul.

In a statement, the Kabul municipal authorities said that all billboards and advertisements which are against Islamic law, or sharia, would be removed. All business owners must observe “ethical values” in printing billboards and advertisements, it said.

Pictures shared on the official Twitter account of the municipality, show women’s faces painted or scratched from billboards and shopfront windows of beauty salons and tailor shops.

Spokesperson Nematullah Barakzai, told dpa that they were obliged to act after a cabinet decision.

Since taking the power, the Taliban have significantly curtailed women’s rights. In many cases, they can no longer return to their jobs. Most secondary schools for girls are closed.

Street protests by female activists have been violently suppressed.
