Government to build capacity of local contractors for projects overseas

Accra, Dec. 16, GNA – Mr Kwasi Amoako-Attah, Minister of Roads and Highways, says government is working towards capacitating local road contractors to undertake projects in other countries.

He said just as road contractors from other countries executed projects in Ghana, local contractors who delivered quality road projects would be supported and equipped to attract projects abroad.

The Minster said this after inspecting and commending the contractor of a 2.65 kilometre dual carriage road at Nanakrom in the Adenta Municipal Assembly area.

The road project, which cost 61 million Ghana cedis, connects Nanakrom to Ashalley Botwe School junction and forms part of the larger five kilometre road network linking Nanakrom to East Legon and Adjiringanor.

Mr Amoako-Atta said all road contractors in the country would go through a reclassification process to inform their capacities to undertake projects.

“Road constructions would not be left in the hands of those who don’t have capacities to undertake them. Road construction is a serious business, you must be qualified before you will be given a contract,” he added.

Mr Amoako said the road would be extended to Katamanso and Ashaiman, saying, the government was committed to continuing and completing all road projects in the country.

He said under the government’s “Year of Roads” agenda, most roads in the country were awarded or being constructed.

“A lot of the road projects had reached substantial completion, somewhere above 80 per cent and nearing completion,” he reiterated.

Mr Eric Asamoah, a taxi driver, who plies the road said it had brought respite to them easing traffic considerably.

He said before the asphalting of the road, they faced difficulties when they used the road, especially when it rained, adding that, it damaged their vehicles.

The Nanakrom dualised road was the main road, which connects to Katamanso and Santor through to Ashiaman and other adjoining areas in the Graeter Accra Region.

The road was an existing single carriage road, which has now been dualised and includes drainage systems and pavements.
