Nine persons killed in illegal mining pit at Atros

Atros (W/R), Nov 26, GNA — An illegal mining pit at Atros near Wassa Essikuma in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region has collapsed and trapped nine persons to death.

The only person who survived is responding to treatment at the Apinto government hospital in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.

The deceased who were yet to be identified were between 20-36 years and all males.

Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicated that on Thursday November, 25, 2021, at about 0430 hours, the Aboso police received a distress call that about 10 illegal miners were trapped in a pit.

The police together with other security agencies went to the scene and had information from some residents of the town that the victims were trapped by debris at the illegal mining pit while they were prospecting for gold nuggets.

The team with the help of an excavator machine and the community retrieved nine bodies and deposited them at the Tarkwa Municipal hospital morgue for autopsy.
