Tema, Nov. 22, GNA – The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has appealed to the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to deal with squatters who have encroached on its office space in the Tema North District.
Mr Emmanuel Akinie, the Tema Regional Manager of the ECG, called for collaboration between the TMA and ECG to help address such issues as they could pose a danger to its installations.
He said this when Mr Yohane Amarh Ashitey, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, paid a familiarisation tour to the ECG office upon his assumption of office.
The meeting afforded them the opportunity to discuss issues of mutual benefit as key stakeholders, who were committed to working together with a common goal to boost economic growth in the harbour city.
Mr Akinie said the office had oversight responsibilities over eight districts; Ada, Krobo, Afienya, Prampram, Nungua, Tema North, Tema South and the recently created Ashaiman District.
He said there had been instances where demolition exercises had been carried out by assemblies without the knowledge of ECG, and pleaded with the TMA to inform them of any intended demolition to enable the company to properly disconnect electricity supply to the affected areas.
Mr Akinie said that would also enable ECG to recover possible debts owed by such customers as well as to take custody of its network, including the meters.
Mr Akinie commended the MCE for the visit and congratulated him on his new appointment.
Mr Ashitey, on his part, pledged to ensure that the TMA would work extensively to ensure that installations of the electricity distributor were not encroached on to affect power supply.
“I am privy to some of the problems ECG faced with regard to people who have encroached on its utility corridors and its effects on power distribution in the Metropolis,” he said, and expressed the hope that the collaboration would help find a lasting solution to those issues.
The MCE said the Assembly had received numerous concerns during engagements with other organisations and residents of nonfunctional streetlights in their localities and pledged to ensure that they were repaired.
