Akatsi South MCE pledges to promote economic development

Akatsi (VR), Nov. 16, GNA – Mr Kofitsey Martin Nyahe, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akatsi South in the Volta Region, has pledged to promote the local economic development of the area to improve the livelihood of the people.

He said the Municipality had a large market, “so the re-activation of the Market Management Committee is just the first move in this direction.”

Mr Nyahe was addressing members of the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly during the second ordinary meeting of the first session of the eighth assembly, which was held at the Assembly hall.

He further disclosed that the tourism potentials of the area would also be harnessed and not left unattended “since it would stimulate the various local economic activities that are usually associated with tourism.”

He said he would be engaging all stakeholders to develop strategies to promote the socio-economic development of the area.

The meeting saw all the assembly members from the electoral areas in attendance.

There were discussions of the recommendations from the various Sub-Committees of the Assembly with issues such as steps to implore in clearing the debts owed to contractors to enable them to complete some projects, including the Akatsi magistrate court, the abandoned Municipal Hospital Project and the Wute Police Post.

Issues of infrastructure in the area of education and health as well as bad road networks were also discussed.

Mr Nyahe said Management had taken some pragmatic measures to ensure the progress of the area.

One of the measures, he said, was a report being prepared by the Department of Agriculture for the attention of the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) to assist in the rehabilitation of a broken down Atsiekpi Irrigation Dam and the dredging of the Worwoe River to enhance farming activities in the dry season.

He added Physical Planning Department would be developing the Local Plan of the Assembly, which were key components of the Planning system.

Mr Wisdom Akpablie, the assembly member for the Wute electoral area, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), called for total collaboration between the assembly and community members to make the vision of the new MCE a reality.

Issues of revenue generation and the allocation of budget for some projects and programmes were also revised.
