Sixty-six MMDCE applicants vetted in Western Region

Takoradi, Sept. 17, GNA – Sixty-six persons who applied for consideration for the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) positions in the Western Region have been vetted.

The Amenfi East District presented the highest number of 10 candidates, with Amenfi Central presenting nine, Nzema East; eight, Amenfi West; seven, Ellembelle; seven, and Jomoro; six.

The others were Ahanta West; five, Tarkwa-Nsueam; three, Shama; three, Wassa East; three, Mpohor; two, Prestea Huni-Valley; two, while Sekondi-Takoradi and Effia Kwesimintsim went unopposed.

Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, the Western Regional Minister, made this known during the first meeting of the Regional Coordinating Council in Takoradi.

He said the candidates, who were vetted by a five-member committee, including himself, demonstrated good leadership skills and deserving of the positions.

“However, only one that can effectively prosecute the agenda of the Government will be appointed,” he said.

Mr Darko-Mensah urged the Assembly members to endeavour to approve the nominations of the President and support them to enhance the development of their various electoral areas.

He congratulated Mr Azuri Sulemana on his election as Presiding Member of the Wassa Amenfi West Municipal Assembly.

Mr Darko-Mensah, however, expressed concern over the inability of Wassa Amenfi Central to elect a Presiding Member after eight unsuccessful attempts and upon several interventions.

“The Presidency had, accordingly, been informed to invoke section 37 sub-section (1,2,3) of the Local Governance Act 2016 (Act 936) to trigger the Dissolution of the Assembly and appoint a person or body by Executive Instrument for the smooth administration of the district,” he said.

Assemblies existed to enhance the well-being, advancement and development of the people and not an arena for partisan politics, he said.
